::faithful – praying for myself and my family. That surgery from a week ago? It actually went quite well, thank you very much.  However – and this is a big one, so brace yourself – the doctors found something much worse than just an inconvenience.  I have cancer.  I’ve known since Wednesday, and we told the kids this weekend.  Yes, we kept the news from them for a few days because a) Mr. Pea and I needed some time to process the information, pray together and get ourselves centered before shared the news with our offspring; and b)  all four kids had major tests at the end of the week and did not need the distraction.

I’ve indulged in my personal pity party, cried for many days, done my research and am ready to move forward.  Our first visit with the oncologist  is tomorrow.  Yes, Our. The nurse already called and told us that Mr. Pea should come to all appointments with me.  A most excellent suggestion, as I’m still a bit shell-shocked and am likely to forget the questions on my list or the answers I hear.  (I do have a list of questions written down, ready to ask.)  We’ll work out a plan together and then execute an old-fashioned butt-kicking against this beast.

I, of course, am going to win.

::The Project – Sigh.  The project will be put on hold indefinitely while we do battle with the alien cells invading my body. We’ve just started wading through the insurance documentation, and we’re hesitant to invest in new cabinets, floors and fluff until we know for sure what our out-of-pocket expenses will be.

:: dedicated – Happy Veteran’s Day!  Here’s a montage of my commissioning day.  The first photo is my Dad and Mr. Pea pinning on my Lieutenant bars.  And that last photo? Yes – that is me losing my shoe on the TCU football field during the ceremonial parade.  I’m told that the Commander at TCU told this story to new cadets for YEARS after I graduated as an example of the Proper Procedure to Carry On Under All Circumstances.

Veteran's Day Montage

:: pondering – Mortality. Thinking about things we REALLY need to do just in case.  Like update our will, and make sure that  I’ve declared Mr. Pea as the designated recipient of my retirement fund.  Find copies of important papers, including the living will and health directives, because we’re supposed to bring them with us to the appointment tomorrow. Really?  I haven’t seen these papers in more than 27 years.  I’m pretty sure they’re in the safe. I think maybe we should add “verify locations of important papers” on the household checklist for spring cleaning. In fact, EVERYONE should do this at least once a year!!

::delicious

  • Shrimp Po’Boys that didn’t happen last week
  • Roasted Chicken, Broccoli, maybe a nice pilaf to go with
  • Taco Tuesday!!
  • Pasta of Some Sort with a Spinach Salad
  • Pot Roast with Potatoes and Roasted Asparagus
  • Big ‘Ole Pot of Beans with Ham and Jalapeno Cornbread
  • Tilapia Romano, Citrus Kale Salad, Macaroni and Cheese

::fun – We went on a bike ride Sunday after mass.  It was absolutely gorgeous.

Mineral Wells Trailway

::fashionable – I’m wearing sweatpants, a yellow long-sleeved tee-shirt with a grey short sleeve tee-shirt over it, my wool hiking socks and a purple cardigan.  Totally unmatched, but warm.  Because yes, it’s only 58 degrees and I’m freezing. You northerners may NOT laugh at this!

::looking ahead – Doctor appointments; taking DirtBike to the orthodontist; probably more doctor appointments.  Facilities Committee Meeting.  Last bit of pavement inventory, then wrapping up several reports and projects at work.

praying for myself.  It’s a self-centric sort of week.  Praying that my surgery goes well and that whatever is found is merely an inconvenience.

::The Project I picked out the range for the kitchen, and am still searching for a drawer type microwave.  I’ve nailed down the arrangement of the cabinets and have started a list of details I want include, like the self-closing drawer stops, a lazy susan gizmo in the corner cabinet and wide, deep drawers.  I still haven’t picked out the actual cabinet style. That task needs to be completed this week, so that I can get a conference meeting with the installation designer for measurements.  Um yeah.  Then I’ll need to start rethinking everything because I’m sure that what I want either won’t actually fit in the space, or will mean lots of custom builds.

::delicious

  • Steak, Macaroni and Cheese, Spinach Salad
  • Chicken Pot Pie, Broccoli
  • Grilled Salmon, Green Beans
  • Gyros
  • Shrimp Scampi
  • Chili (again!) Frito Pie
  • Burgers, Broccoli Salad

What?  There are baked oven foods on the list?  Yes there are.  I procured a countertop oven to tide us over until the kitchen is fixed.  I baked muffins.  I made home-made macaroni and cheese.  I even baked brownies.  The family was ecstatic.

::fun

Really?

Yes, this is a real mailbox, spotted in a neighboring town.  It has a bear on top of it. I don’t know why.  It’s as random as local high schools who have elk and kangaroos as mascots, neither of which are indigenous to Texas.

::looking ahead

Biology project that involves spray paint, glitter and a bit of concrete mix.  Candy Corn, because it’s Halloween.  Workday for mountain bike trail building.  A day or two of rest.

praying for my family, especially my kids.  Cherry Ames  is almost finished with college and her world is about to open up three/four/five-fold.  I pray for her to make wise decisions, to hold fast to her faith, and that she finds a wonderful job!  Princess Pea is negotiating the leap from the Blinn Community College to A&M Proper.  I pray that the process is a simple and seamless as the TAPS Counselor(s) have promised her, and that she continues to do so very, very well in her studies. The Architect is growing up quickly; he’s more of a man and less of a child every day.  I pray that he continues to be steadfast and loyal. DirtBike – child of my heart – is doing so much better in school this year.  I pray that he continues to work hard, and that he doesn’t become discouraged when things don’t go so well; a good dose of heaven-sent persistence.

::healthy

I actually went to the Doctor for some ongoing issues. More tests to be done before we panic.  Please keep me in your prayers.

::pondering

Prayer, and ways to make it seamless within the passing of my days.

::Homey

I washed the curtains from the living room and dining room this weekend.  I love the way they look blowing about on the line.  I remember running through sheets on my Mom’s clothesline when I was a kid.  It was the best part of laundry day!

::creative

It’s time to tackle a really, really big project.  Like seriously big.  We’ve saved up the money and we’ll make the time – so here’s the commitment:   we are remodeling our kitchen, fixing up the bathrooms and replacing the flooring in our house!!!

We have lived in this house for 21 years now, and this is our first remodel. (Don’t judge…we were too busy raising kids to replace the carpets.)  This is going to be my “creative” report for the next many months.  First step?  I’m writing down the plan in my head for The Project (as it will now be named), with complete task lists and DEADLINES.  I will share this plan with Mr. Pea, and make him sign his name on it, because I don’t want this to drag on forever.  I will also make him pinkie-promise that if the schedule starts to slide, he will either take vacation time and work on The Project full-time, or he will let me hire a contractor to finish it.  I NEED a kitchen, folks!  I’ve been using a dying oven for three years (it’s been totally kaput since June of this year)  and now the microwave is acting funky, too. Cabinet doors are breaking daily, and the floors? Let me just say that you should never, ever try to keep carpeting more than a decade. It really does need to be replaced, especially if you’re raising kids and have pets of any sort.

Let the craziness begin!

::delicious

  • Steak, Mashed Potatotes, Spinach Salad
  • Turkey Sandwiches on Croissants and Veggie Soup
  • Chili Frito Pie (Thanks, Jenny, for the idea!)
  • Barbeque Chicken, Green Beans and Something Else
  • Veggie Lasagna, if I can figure out how to ‘bake’ it in a crockpot
  • Grilled Ginger Orange Salmon, Saffron Rice and Peas
  • Bean Soup with Ham, Cornbread Muffins (baked in my friend’s kitchen)
