Sew What! – Project Two

I’ve joined my bloggy friend Cynthia from The Sewing Dork, and her friend Michelle from Until Wednesday Calls for Sew What!, a summer sew-along.  Participants pick their fabric and tackle the challenge projects.   The second projects assigned was to make a bag/ purse/ clutch and decorate it with words.

Admittedly, I stretched the definition of “bag” for this project, and turned out a new clothespin bag for the clothesline!  I really needed a new on, as my current one had a big hole in the bottom and was spewing pins all over the lawn.
As you can see, this is actually an apron, but since its purpose is to hold and carry pins, technically, it’s a bag. Or a very large pocket.  I used the tutorial here at My Byrd House to make this.  The changes I made were to make the back of the bag out of two layers of fabric back-to-back for more stability, and to make bias tape ties instead of a waistband.
As for the word art, I cut out letters on the bias and simply stitched them on with a running stitch in heavy quilters thread.  I’m hoping that they fray a little for some textural interest.
The entire project is made from stash materials – in fact, I used up every smidgen of the funky geometric print!

Sew What!

Okay – like I seriously have time to do any sewing?  Why am I torturing myself?

Let’s see….it’s summer.  I’m bored. I’m losing weight hand over fist and need to tailor all of my dress pants and skirts.  I already dragged my sewing machine out of the closet to do some mending, so it’s already set up on the dining room table.  It’s too hot to run outside. My fingers are just ITCHING to sew!  Yes.  That’s my reasoning, and it suits just fine!

For myself, I’m choosing cotton fabrics – specifically recycled cottons, re-purposed cottons, stash-busting cottons!!  Any cotton is fair game, as long as it supports my efforts for a responsible, sustainable lifestyle.  And, just to be up front with the fact that I will be bending the rules to suit my own needs, I’m tackling the first denim skirt challenge by remaking a COTTON denim skirt that has become so large on me that it twists around when I walk.  I just hate it when the fly zipper ends up on my left hip. Seriously.

Aprons on the Brain

I like love to cook. Really. I cook everyday for my family, volunteer to cook at church functions, make meals for friends who need a boost, bake my own bread, make jam and pickles – I am a bonafide Foodie!.

However…August is a struggle. It’s back to school time. It’s get back into the children’s activities time. It’s a gazillion degrees outside and it’s just too dang HOT here in north central Texas to turn on anything except the grill. (Hubby not included in this statement!)

So, I’ve turned my attention to wearing aprons and dreaming about cooler weather that will let me back into my kitchen, and I found another super wonderful Apron Celebration over at The Apron Goddesses. Click on Over and Partake of the Goodness!
