Minutes – August 20

::faithful

Praying for

  • a Friend whose breast cancer has returned with a vengeance, that she is accepted quickly into a trial chemo protocol
  • for Jen, who had an unexpected relapse with her leukemia; that this round of chemo will knock it back into remission so she can move forward with the next donor cell tramsplant
  • for Lauren and Chris, that you are welcomed here in your new home!
  • for Cherry Ames, that you discern carefully over the next several months regarding your education and future
Grateful for
  • rain!  rain! rain!  Oh mercy, we got close to 4 inches of rain!!
  • cooler temperatures – it has dropped into the 60’s for the past few nights.  *sigh*
  • hatch chilies

Yes, Hatch chilies, the harbingers of the end of summer.  They have a very short season, so we grab them while we can and preserve them for summer goodness in the middle of winter. I don’t have a pressure canner, so I roast them on the grill, then pop them into freezer bags.  Yum!

Cooler temperatures means I’m back outdoors and back in the [bike] saddle.  I rode 13 miles today at lunch and it was blissfully Not Hot!

::creative

Nothing more exciting than hemming uniform pants and maybe painting blobs of trial colors on the garage door so we can pick one.  If the weather holds – that is, if the temperatures remain below 100 – I plan to finally, finally paint the trim on the house over Labor Day weekend.

The Architect continues building Cherry Ames’ bicycle, and he’s working on a popsicle stick crane for engineering class.  I’m not allowed to help with that. Bummer.

DirtBike has started a model of a German WWI aircraft for his History Fair project.

In celebration of cooler temperatures, I’m cooking this week!

  • Red Beans and Rice
  • Leftover Red Beans and Rice, Cornbread and Salad
  • Roasted Chicken, with Carrots and Asparagus
  • Leftover Roasted Chicken, made into Chicken Spaghetti
  • Hoagie Sandwiches
  • Fish Tacos
  • Hamburgers

::fun

Well…school has started, which means ‘fun hours’ are curtailed by ‘study hours’.  I’m sure we’ll think of something to do besides homework and chores. Like maybe some kayaking.

::looking ahead

 It’s going to be a busy week.  The boys are missing their sisters, and have been acting out with the upheaval in household.  Not just the boys, but Mr. Pea, too.  Every male member of the Pea Home was cranky and argumentative all day yesterday, including Max the Dog (whining) and Bob the Cat (clawing furniture).  By dinner time, I was ready to snap, so I sent the human family members on a bike ride.  I told them to ride towards Aledo and to not turn around until they got there.  Since Aledo is about 9 miles away, I bought myself about an hour and a half of quiet time.

I’m sure that in another week we’ll all be back into the calm routine of school, and everyone will be their usually cheerful selves.  Including me.

Minutes – August 13

::faithful

Praying for

  • Princess Pea and The Favorite Extra Daughter, starting on their Grand Adventure in AggieLand!
  • a Friend who is reeling with grief and shock at the unexpected deaths of her brother and cousin
  • The Architect, for a smooth transition back to school
  • DirtBike, for an end to the pubescent testosterone overload that is making him totally unreasonable every waking moment.
Grateful for
  • summer tomatoes
  • chocolate – I’ve needed much this week

::healthy

Yeah for the week!  It’s still hot but I have access to an indoor gym and made use of it.  The exertion helped with my own anxiety.  Let’s hear it for endorphins!

Oh my gosh, this is So Cute!

Salad and Sandwich Week was a hit. We’re still in the hundreds this week, so it continues.

  • Pulled Pork Sandwiches
  • Turkey Wraps
  • Cobb Salad
  • Pizzas on the Grill
  • Pesto Pasta and a Salad
  • Hoagie Sandwiches

::fun

According to DirtBike, we have no fun. Ever.  See?  Totally unreasonable. TOTALLY.

::looking ahead

Boxing up the odds and ends that Princess Pea forgot, like her coffee mug and her blue jeans.  (They were in the dryer.)

School started today, Which means that there are piles and piles of forms to fill out, books to cover, homework and studying.  DirtBike announces today that homework is a total waste of time, and that school stinks.  He’s convinced that Mr. Pea and I are insane because we insist that school work be completed before biking ensues.  He has argued unceasingly for the past three hours that he does not need to write his summer reading notes in complete sentences with the first word capitalized.  UNREASONABLE, I TELL YOU!!!

We are all tired today and particularly sad because Princess Pea is far away and Cherry Ames leaves in a few more days. Tomorrow will be better, I just know it.

Friday’s Letters – August 10

friday's letters

Dear Sales Rep from a Local Pipe Manufacturer – The entire incident was absolutely hilarious.  No harm, no foul.  I wish I could have seen the look your face in that second that you realized that something was wonky with your phone and that my incoming call was magically linked to the conversation you were already having.  I REALLY wish I could have seen your face in the second that followed when it occurred to you that you just said something wickedly inappropriate to a client (me)!!!

Dear Architect – You cannot leave a tub of Axe hair pomade in the console of the car in the summertime where we live.  It is more than 100 degrees outside, which means that it’s about 732 degrees inside the car.  More importantly, you cannot leave that tub of hair goo laying sideways in the console.  Why?  Because it turns to liquid and oozes out of the screw top lid.  It fills the little tray and drips down the side.  You may now go clean the car.

Dear School – Seriously?  It’s already time?  Time for books and schedules, homework and projects?  Time to drive my daughters far away and leave them to the adventure with smiles and tears?

It’s a bittersweet weekend in the Pea Home.  Pray for us this weekend, for safe travels, for no strained backs from schlepping furniture up stairs, for grace and patience.
