Naming the New Year

Following on a suggestion by Jenny at Suscpico , I asked the Holy Spirit to give me a word for this year. To quote Jenny:

“There is a common practice of “Naming” the year by setting aside a word for the year; a focal point to direct our days, weave our weeks together and attach month to blessed month.  Just as a North Star, or the straight arrow of a compass will redirect the lost, weary and confused so our word for the year can gently lead us back on the path we have set out for ourselves.  All steps are directed by God the Father, but the way in which we choose to walk is up to us.”

Several words clamored for my attention, words like “faithful” and “trust”, “give” and “acceptance”, but these words rang false as I rolled them around in my head.  If I claimed any of these as my compass for the year, it would be more for show to impress others.

I needed a simpler word, and I found inspiration in a remembered homily given by our Bishop Vann at my daughter’s graduation mass several years ago.

be

For today I will just be.  I will be for God, his beloved child.   I will be for Mr. Pea his loved and loving wife; I will be my children’s mother.  I will be here, in this moment with my eyes and heart open.  I will not fret about yesterday, choosing instead to forgive and let go.  I will embrace the moments of grace in my life.  I will not borrow worry for tomorrow.  I will simply be.

Keep the Faith.

Friday’s Letters – January 11

friday's letters

Dear Weatherman –  Rain! Rain! Rain!  We had more rain this week than we’ve had in the past six months!  You ROCK!!

Dear Dean of the Math College at that Institution of Higher Learning Down South – You really messed up by dropping Princess Pea from her math and chemistry classes without notification, question or information.  You did redeem yourself by fixing the Chemistry class right away; your response to the math class issue was not as great.  You can NOT arbitrarily play with your students’ academic life, reducing them to part time status on a whim. Students like Princess Pea are working hard to get into other academic programs, and your shenanigans could put their transfer statuses into limbo.  You’re lucky it all worked out with Princess Pea, because you do NOT want me in your office raging like a Mama Tiger.

Dear Student at that Institution of Higher Learning Down South Who Dropped the Calculus Class at the Last Minute – Thank you.

Dear God – Thank you for the amazing Moment of Grace this week.  Thank you for that instant that Princess Pea logged on to buy a biology book, saw the slot in the Calculus class open up, and clicked on ‘register’ in the nanosecond the one seat in the class became available.  Thank you for that little miracle!

Linking up with the Ladies at Suscipio.

Recognize your Moments of Grace.  Keep the Faith.

Friday’s Letters – January 4

friday's letters

Dear Weatherman –  Thank You for the Christmas Snow!  It was beautiful.

Dear Team Wilhelm – You guys are GREAT! Truly an outstanding group of guys. I’m so awed at your generosity in donating vacation time for our newest young engineer.  Everyone pitched in a few hours, making it possible for Obi to stay home and recover from his emergency achilles-tendon-reattachment-surgery.   You do know that you will all have to take turns carrying him up the stairs every day when he comes back to work next week, right?

Veggie Schwarma

Dear Mr. Mahmoud – Oh yum. Lunch today was utterly fantastic, as it always is at your King Tut Restaurant.  Mr. Mahmoud, if I begged, and offered to wash dishes for a month, would you teach me how to make your Vegetable Shawarma?  And the tahini sauce?  And the falafel salad?

Dear Pea Family – You are forgiven for the Great  December Bamboozlement.  My heart has been captured and She can stay.
