Minutes – August 13

::faithful

Praying for

  • Princess Pea and The Favorite Extra Daughter, starting on their Grand Adventure in AggieLand!
  • a Friend who is reeling with grief and shock at the unexpected deaths of her brother and cousin
  • The Architect, for a smooth transition back to school
  • DirtBike, for an end to the pubescent testosterone overload that is making him totally unreasonable every waking moment.
Grateful for
  • summer tomatoes
  • chocolate – I’ve needed much this week

::healthy

Yeah for the week!  It’s still hot but I have access to an indoor gym and made use of it.  The exertion helped with my own anxiety.  Let’s hear it for endorphins!

Oh my gosh, this is So Cute!

Salad and Sandwich Week was a hit. We’re still in the hundreds this week, so it continues.

  • Pulled Pork Sandwiches
  • Turkey Wraps
  • Cobb Salad
  • Pizzas on the Grill
  • Pesto Pasta and a Salad
  • Hoagie Sandwiches

::fun

According to DirtBike, we have no fun. Ever.  See?  Totally unreasonable. TOTALLY.

Boxing up the odds and ends that Princess Pea forgot, like her coffee mug and her blue jeans.  (They were in the dryer.)

School started today, Which means that there are piles and piles of forms to fill out, books to cover, homework and studying.  DirtBike announces today that homework is a total waste of time, and that school stinks.  He’s convinced that Mr. Pea and I are insane because we insist that school work be completed before biking ensues.  He has argued unceasingly for the past three hours that he does not need to write his summer reading notes in complete sentences with the first word capitalized.  UNREASONABLE, I TELL YOU!!!

We are all tired today and particularly sad because Princess Pea is far away and Cherry Ames leaves in a few more days. Tomorrow will be better, I just know it.

Minutes – July 30

::faithful

Praying for

  • a Friend who need rest
  • a Friend who is overloaded with grief
  • a Friend who has way too much teenage angst in her home
Grateful for
  • my husband
  • my children
  • a home that is a shelter from the world

For the first time in forever, last week was a complete no-go. I didn’t run, bike, lift weights, do a single push-up or sit-up. I didn’t track any calories.  The heat is so miserable, and my frustration with weight loss got the better of my good intentions.  I know these last several pounds are not going to go away by themselves, but I was tired of the trying last week.  I’ve been trying for more than a year to shed the last few pounds, so much that I am blinded to the 67 pounds I have already lost.  How will I know when to say ‘when’?

Squeee!!!! The pink knitted piggy is finished!  SO SO cute.  All I need to do is stitch on some eyes, then I’ll post a picture.

::delicious

In the interest of my own sanity, I have declared this week to be an Official No Cooking Sandwich and Salad Week.

  • Taco Salad
  • Turkey Wraps
  • Pasta Salad with Ricotta Pesto, Zucchini and Corn
  • Bacon Egg and Cheese Sandwiches (okay, I’ll have to cook bacon for this, but bacon?  Bacon makes everything better, and I’ll cook it up out on the grill and not in the house.)
  • Shrimp Club Salad, using the extra bacon I prepared from the day before.
  • Club Salad
  • Chicken Caesar Salad

::fun

The Architect had his first race of the Fall Season.  Yes, it was hot and sticky, but WOW!!!  He placed Second!!  We’re so proud of him.  He’s been training since spring and working very hard at improving his technical skills – turning and climbing.

Start

First out of the gate!

::looking ahead

I am missing my youngest daughter with a ferocity that startles me, and she hasn’t left yet.    I don’t remember being this unsettled when Cherry Ames first left home.  I need to hold it together this week so that a) I don’t worry Mr. Pea; and b) I send Princess Pea off with smiles and happy anticipation.  She is so excited about leaving for college this week.

School Orientation Day is Wednesday.  I need to hem the boys’ new uniform pants before then, as well as find DirtBike’s left shoe and fill out the piles of forms.  The schools should seriously step into the 20th century and have all these forms in an electronic format with  on-line submittal.

Friday’s Letters – August 3

friday's letters

Dear City Water System Computer Model – You have occupied every spare brain cell I have this week, and I am SO glad you are up and running.  Now play nice and let me calibrate you quickly without tearing my hair out.

Dear DirtBike – Halleluiah!!  You made it!!  This has been a long, anguished summer, with  much angst and many tears [mine].  You aced Algebra, Son!  You conquered Spanish!, You rocked conjugating verbs en español, even though your teacher (ahem, that would be ME, Chickies!) doesn’t speak it fluently.  You made it to 8th Grade.  Let’s get our work done DURING the school session this year, m’kay?  Because I really don’t want to do this again next summer.

Dear Windowsill Dove Babies –  Wow, you grew up fast.  I looked out Tuesday morning to see you both strutting up and down the windowsill in front of my window! Now you have fluttered to the ground and are hanging out in the shrubbery where your parents still bring you an occasional bite to eat.  Live long and prosper!

Dear House Air Conditioner – Thank you for hanging with us for another week.  I know you’re old and tired.  We really, really appreciate your hard work.

Dear  Dr. Ford – Thank you for your very interesting, enlightening lecture at the Eckenfelder Lecture Series.  Yes, the industry DOES need to start paying more than just lip service to recycling water.  We can’t continue using freshwater for hydraulic fracking.  Your stories about Dr. Eckenfelder were just the icing on the cake, what a privilege to have know him.

P.S.  Because it’s so ridiculously hot and I feel crabby sassy, this will be my favorite saying for the next few weeks. At least until every Pea Family student is safely back to school, with all their belongings, immunizations, haircuts, shoes and books.  (Thanks Roxie for the idea!)
